IMPD bodycam footage shows chaotic shootout outside east side bar

INDIANAPOLIS — Police have released bodycam and surveillance footage showing a frantic shootout in a parking lot outside of an east side bar that left multiple people injured, including a police officer, and the accused shooter dead.

Previous reports detail how two IMPD off-duty officers were working security at 11:11 Bar & Grill, formerly called Fuzion Ultra Lounge, in the 9400 block of East Washington Street on March 24 when a shooting broke out in the parking lot at 1:30 a.m.

Four citizens ended up being caught in the gunfire and transported to a hospital with non-serious injuries. A police officer was also minorly injured.

Dominique Lamonte Durham Sr., 37, who is accused of opening fire on the crowd gathered outside the bar — that included paramedics and police officers — ended up being struck twice by return fire and died later that night in a hospital.

IMPD said the shooting stemmed from a fight that occurred inside the bar. After several customers were told to leave the business, Durham is accused of opening fire on a group of citizens and officers who were standing outside the bar.

Surveillance footage shows that fire crews and paramedics were already on scene when the shooting broke out. The crews were treating someone who had been suffering from a seizure in an unrelated incident.

The surveillance footage released by IMPD shows people dunking for cover in the parking lot as gunshots ring out as Durham allegedly opened fire.

IMPD said an officer exited his patrol car and returned fire toward Durham. The officer was shot in the thigh by Durham and fell to the ground before getting back up and taking cover behind a column.

“Control, shots fired, shots fired!” he can be heard radioing in as he runs for cover.

The second officer can then be seen firing at Durham before taking cover behind a police cruiser.

At one point, the officer approaches the injured officer and asks if he’d been injured.

“Where you hit?”

“Shoulder or leg, I feel like.”

“Put a tourniquet.”

Officers were unable to locate the shooter in the chaotic parking lot as victims ran for cover or ran toward their injured friends.

Paramedics treated four citizens on scene who were suffering from gunshot wounds. IMPD said three of the citizens were shot by Durham’s gunfire but said it is unknown if the fourth was hit by Durham’s gunfire or caught in the crossfire of the officers’ return gunshots.

All four citizens were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police officers transported the injured IMPD officer themselves to a hospital. The injured officer was released the same day.

According to IMPD, Durham ended up arriving at Community East Hospital approximately 20 minutes after the shooting seeking medical treatment. Durham was suffering from two gunshot wounds and was dropped off at the hospital by a friend.

Durham ended up dying from his injuries.

IMPD said that witnesses helped identify Durham as the shooter. The handgun reportedly used by Durham in the shooting was also found in the parking lot.

As with all police-action shootings, the civilian-led Use of Force Review Board will review this incident.
